A groundbreaking new exhibition launching in London aims to finally recognize the enormous influence of Black British fashion designers. “The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion” at Somerset House pays tribute to the iconic work of designers who faced racism and barriers yet shaped British style for generations.
While names like Bruce Oldfield found mainstream success, many pioneering Black designers in the UK from the 1970s onward did not receive proper credit for their cultural impact. The exhibition puts a spotlight on influential figures like Joe Casely-Hayford, whose designs empowered Black Britons but never got acclaim like his white peers.
Curators created “The Missing Thread” to chronicle the forgotten history of Black fashion creatives in the UK. After being ignored by the industry they helped build, this exhibition finally celebrates their aesthetic influence and honors their struggles firsthand.
Young Black artists can draw inspiration from these untold stories. By highlighting legends like Casely-Hayford, the curators hope to motivate more Black youth to boldly pursue creative careers despite ongoing challenges.
“The Missing Thread” provides an unflinching look at the racism Black designers faced while also showcasing their visionary work. Visitors can admire stunning pieces, learn about boundary-breaking careers, and reflect on how to build a more inclusive British fashion industry. Don’t miss this groundbreaking exhibition through January 2023.
