The de Young Museum in San Francisco has partnered with Snap Inc. to create an innovative augmented reality experience for its upcoming fashion exhibition “Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style.”
Opening in January 2024, the exhibition will trace the evolution of style in San Francisco over the past 100 years. It will showcase over 50 historic fashion pieces, from early 20th century haute couture gowns to contemporary local designs.
In collaboration with Snap, creator of Snapchat, the de Young will debut AR mirrors that allow visitors to virtually try on three iconic evening wear looks from the collection. Using Snap’s AR technology, the outfits will be configured to fit different body types and sizes.
The digitally rendered designs include a Yves Saint Laurent ensemble, a Valentino gown, and an outfit by San Francisco-based designer Kaisik Wong. By virtually wearing these fashions, visitors can immerse themselves in San Francisco’s rich fashion history.
This represents the first use of Snap’s AR mirrors in a U.S. museum. It expands the tech company’s partnerships with cultural institutions to provide augmented reality experiences, including the Louvre and LACMA.
“We’re excited to democratize fashion by giving attendees the opportunity to try on timeless fashion they otherwise might never be able to with the help of augmented reality,” said Rajni Jacques of Snap Inc.
The de Young’s “Fashioning San Francisco” exhibition will be on view from January 18, 2024 to July 7, 2024.
