Edna Karr High School made waves in the fashion scene with its inaugural fashion show, where students took center stage in custom-designed garments, marking the beginning of a new era in fashion education.
The event, held last week on Friday, May 3, at the school’s gymnasium, was a spectacle of lights, camera, and action, with students showcasing their creativity and talent. Local host Look at Warren led the proceedings, while acclaimed rap artist Neno Calvin provided electrifying performances. The panel of judges, featuring industry luminaries such as Emline-James, Damage Control, FRGN, Heem Adisa, Ragz to Riches, and Sew Swift, added to the excitement of the evening.
Inspired by a vision to nurture creativity and talent in her students, physical science teacher Jamari Juluke founded the Haus of EK, an initiative aimed at empowering young creatives through fashion and design.
“Creatives in high school are often overshadowed by other activities, but I wanted to provide a platform for my students to shine,” Juluke explained.
The highlight of the show was the stunning collections crafted by 10th grader Jaila Lee and 11th grader Joey Miles. Lee’s vibrant collection featured intricately crocheted garments, showcasing her mastery of color and texture. Reflecting on her experience, Lee expressed her newfound knowledge in pattern-making, fabric selection, and sewing techniques.
Miles, on the other hand, wowed the audience with his innovative designs, which included reconstructed ties and patchwork pieces. Despite the challenges of balancing school commitments and fashion aspirations, Miles found the journey rewarding, stating, “The fashion show has taught me valuable lessons about my brand, Interstellar Love.”
Guided by local designer Jaelan Ricard of JaeRiStudios and sewing company NOLA DDM, students received hands-on training in garment construction from scratch. Ricard, passionate about nurturing the next generation of designers, described her involvement as an “immediate yes,” highlighting the opportunity to share her expertise with aspiring talents.
The crowning moment of the evening came when Lee and Miles were surprised with LLCs presented by Emline James, symbolizing their potential to turn their passion into thriving businesses.
Reflecting on the experience, Miles expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I loved every second of it, and I would definitely do it again.”
