In a move towards a more sustainable future, Berlin Fashion Week (BFW) is taking cues from Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) by adopting its renowned sustainability requirements.
The collaboration signals a significant shift in the fashion industry, with BFW committing to integrate CPHFW’s Minimum Standards as a mandatory criterion for participating brands.
Supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises, and executed by Fashion Council Germany in partnership with Studio MM04, this initiative aims to accelerate sustainability efforts in both Nordic and German fashion markets.
Michael Biel, State Secretary for Economic Affairs in Germany, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “By implementing the sustainability requirements, Berlin will become one of the leading international locations for a responsible and innovative fashion industry.”
Scott Lipinski, CEO of Fashion Council Germany, highlighted the collaborative opportunity, emphasizing the importance of innovation and adaptation to meet the evolving demands of society and the fashion sector.
For Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of CPHFW, this partnership represents more than just alignment—it underscores the fashion industry’s potential for positive change. Thorsmark hopes that the global recognition of Sustainability Requirements will inspire further collaborations and transformations.
The Sustainability Requirements will be fully enforced for the approximately 35 labels showcasing at BFW by February 2026, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable fashion ecosystem.
