Young Fashion Prodigy: 17-Year-Old Designer’s Oceanic Collection Debuts at St. Pete ArtWorks
In the vibrant art scene of St. Petersburg, Florida, a rising star is making waves with her unique fashion designs. Lucy Haura, a 17-year-old high school senior, is proving that age is just a number when it comes to creativity and entrepreneurship in the fashion world.
From Halloween Costumes to High Fashion
Haura’s journey into fashion design began unconventionally in 2020 with a simple trip to Goodwill. “I like how creative it makes me, but it also makes me feel really independent,” Haura explains. What started as a quest to create her own Halloween costume has blossomed into a full-fledged passion for fashion design.
Inspiration from Science and Surrealism
Her participation in the Fashion Design at The Dalí program marked a turning point in her creative process. Inspired by Salvador Dalí’s “GALACIDALACIDESOXIRIBUNUCLEICACID,” Haura found a unique way to merge her love for science with fashion:
“I really love science as well, so I try to incorporate the double helix, like the strand of DNA in my embroidery,” Haura revealed.
Recognition and Opportunity
Haura’s innovative designs caught the eye of St. Pete ArtWorks during a call for artists. As the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Emerging Artist winner, her work will be prominently displayed at the St. Pete ArtWorks collaborative space on Central Avenue throughout September.
“It’s honestly a great opportunity. I love being able to show my expression,” Haura said enthusiastically. “Central’s a huge street. There’s tons of art, and I think it’s awesome to see that people can walk by and look at my stuff.”
The Sirenia Collection: A Dive into Oceanic Beauty
Haura’s newest collection, the Sirenia Collection, is set to make a splash during a fashion show at St. Pete’s Second Saturday Art Walk. This collection draws inspiration from the mystical allure of mermaids and sirens, as well as the breathtaking beauty of the ocean.
About her collection, Haura shares, “I hope they see beauty in it, and that you put all this work in and create something awesome, and I think it’s really cool to show people different perspectives and how you can imagine something in a different form.”
Balancing Act: School, Sports, and Fashion
Despite her burgeoning fashion career, Haura remains a typical 17-year-old in many ways. She juggles her design work with school commitments, sports activities, and the daunting task of college applications. Her ability to maintain this balance while pursuing her passion is truly remarkable.
Future Aspirations
As Haura looks to the future, she’s focusing on college applications while also hoping to expand her fashion business. With a touch of humor, she mentions that her designs have already taken over her family’s living room, hinting at the need for a dedicated workspace as her creations continue to multiply.
A Young Visionary in the Making
Lucy Haura’s story is one of inspiration and determination. At just 17, she has already made significant strides in the fashion industry, proving that with passion and creativity, one can turn a simple Halloween costume project into a promising career in design. As St. Petersburg’s art community embraces this young talent, it’s clear that Haura’s future in fashion is as bright as the Florida sunshine.
