Diversity was a clear priority among the top male models booked for the SS24 menswear runway shows held in June 2023. Of the 10 most prolific catwalk models, 6 were men of color spanning nationalities like Senegalese, Nigerian, and South Sudanese.
Senegalese models Dara Gueye and Mamuor Awk Majeng tied by walking 12 shows each during the seasonal fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Paris. They were followed closely by Nigerian model Awwal Adeoti who walked 11 shows.
Other non-white models among the top 10 included Craig Shimirimana from Belgium and South Sudanese model Zakaria Dau, who walked 10 shows each. Shimirimana is signed to Rapture Management in Antwerp while Dau is with PRM Agency.
Rounding out the top male models were Nicola Macchi, Antoine Brabant, Danilo Markovic, and Douta Sidibe. French model Brabant walked 9 shows with The Ølz agency and Senegalese model Sidibe also counted 9 shows.
The strong presence of diverse male models reflects fashion’s ongoing efforts to improve representation and inclusion on the runway. As brands cast more ethnically diverse talent, it helps set the tone for broader acceptance in society.
While still outpacing female model diversity, the SS24 menswear shows indicated continued movement in the right direction. Providing a platform for male models of different ethnicities and backgrounds remains a priority for many designers and casting directors.
