Winter Skin Care Guide: Expert Tips to Prevent Dry, Flaky Skin in Cold Weather
As winter approaches, many people experience the uncomfortable effects of dry, flaky skin. While the official winter season may not begin until late December, the early onset of cold weather can already start affecting your skin’s health and appearance.
According to Dr. Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at George Washington University’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the winter season presents unique challenges for skin care. “The combination of low humidity, indoor heating, and harsh cold air creates perfect conditions for skin to become dry and flaky,” explains Dr. Friedman.
Understanding Winter Skin Challenges
Dry skin isn’t just a cosmetic concern – it can lead to serious complications. When skin becomes dry and itchy, scratching can increase the risk of infection. However, there are effective strategies to maintain healthy skin during the colder months.
Smart Cleansing Practices
While hand hygiene remains crucial, excessive washing can be counterproductive. “Water, surprisingly, can be extremely drying to the skin,” Dr. Friedman notes. “It can strip away natural moisturizing factors, potentially leaving skin drier than before.” He recommends using gentle, moisturizing soaps and avoiding harsh cleansers during winter months.
Choosing the Right Products
For optimal winter skin care, Dr. Friedman suggests considering products labeled for eczema treatment, even for those without the condition. These products often contain beneficial ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, which helps combat inflammation. Additionally, products containing pre- and postbiotics can support your skin’s natural bacterial barrier.
Effective Moisturizing Techniques
The timing and method of moisturizer application significantly impact its effectiveness. Apply moisturizers to damp, not wet, skin for optimal absorption. For severely dry hands, Dr. Friedman recommends his “hand rash boot camp” technique: soak hands in lukewarm water briefly, pat dry, apply thick moisturizer, and wear gloves for 30 minutes to lock in hydration.
Advanced Skin Protection
For cracked skin or fissures, opt for liquid bandages rather than traditional adhesive ones. Most importantly, don’t neglect sun protection – UV rays can damage skin even during winter months, making sunscreen application essential year-round.
