In a transformative move, Mariah Maxwell, a mother turned hair and nail professional, has pioneered Oroville’s inaugural black beauty supply store, eliminating the need for locals to endure long drives to Sacramento for essential beauty products.
Oroville, previously devoid of such establishments, witnessed the grand opening of Kam’s Beauty Supply Store last spring, a venture that has been warmly embraced by the African American community and people of color. Maxwell, a licensed natural hair and nail technician, shared her motivation for launching Kam’s, expressing her surprise at the absence of black beauty supply stores in the vicinity.
“When I first moved to Oroville, I couldn’t believe the lack of accessibility. I’ve never had to travel over an hour or resort to online shopping just to maintain my locks. That’s what inspired Kam’s,” Maxwell explained.
Kam’s Beauty Supply not only stocks a diverse array of black hair products but also boasts an integrated hair salon catering to various hair types and styles, from dreads to braids. The establishment has become a local haven, saving residents like Ruby Thomas the hassle of frequent trips to Sacramento.
Ruby Thomas, an Oroville resident since 2002, stumbled upon Kam’s last spring during a shopping excursion on Myers Street. She expressed her joy at finding a beauty supply store much closer to home, relieving her of the need to drive to Sacramento for specific beauty products.
“I used to search high and low at Sally’s, unsure if I would find the black products I needed. Having Mariah here with Kam’s is a game-changer,” Thomas exclaimed, emphasizing her loyalty to Kam’s since its opening.
Kam’s Beauty Supply goes beyond merely offering black hair products; it provides a full spectrum of beauty services, including nail care and professional hair styling. The establishment’s dedicated staff is equipped to handle all hair types and styles, creating a welcoming space for the Oroville community.
