Renowned model Naomi Campbell graces photographers during a photocall promoting the forthcoming exhibition ‘Naomi: In Fashion’ at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, marking her illustrious 40-year career in the fashion industry. Set against the backdrop of The Dorchester hotel, London, this exhibition promises to be a testament to Campbell’s unparalleled influence and style.
After an extraordinary four decades in the limelight, the queen of the catwalk is receiving the ultimate tribute.
The Victoria and Albert Museum proudly presents “NAOMI: In Fashion,” a captivating homage to Naomi Campbell’s enduring legacy. Opening its doors in June, this exhibition will feature an array of iconic designer ensembles worn by Campbell, cementing her status as one of the most prominent figures in fashion and a trailblazer for Black women worldwide.
“I’m honored to be asked by the V&A to share my life in clothes with the world,” expressed Campbell, 53, in a statement.
Sonnet Stanfill, a fashion curator at the museum, hailed Campbell as “one of the most prolific and influential figures in contemporary culture.”
Spanning across the exhibition are approximately 100 looks and accessories sourced from renowned fashion houses such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and more.
Highlights include a 1989 Thierry Mugler car-inspired corset, a striking bubble-gum pink Valentino gown and feather cape donned by Campbell at the 2019 Met Gala, and the iconic Vivienne Westwood platform shoes worn during her memorable 1993 catwalk fall.
Born in London, Campbell’s journey commenced at a young age when she attended stage school. Her career soared at 15 when she was scouted by a model agent, ultimately paving her way to the runways of Paris and Milan. Notably, she became the first Black model to grace the cover of Vogue France in 1988.
A significant portion of the exhibition delves into Campbell’s intimate connection with the late Azzedine Alaïa, a Tunisian-born designer who played a pivotal role in her life and career. Alaïa’s Parisian home and studio became a sanctuary for Campbell, inspiring his creations while nurturing her burgeoning career.
The exhibition also pays homage to Campbell’s advocacy for diversity and inclusion within the fashion industry, as well as her unwavering support for emerging talents.
Mark your calendars for this extraordinary showcase of fashion history. “NAOMI: In Fashion” will run from June 22 to April 2025, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the unparalleled world of Naomi Campbell.
