Javon Ford is not just another cosmetic chemist; he’s a visionary on a mission to revolutionize the beauty industry’s approach to inclusivity. His journey from chemistry student to social media sensation has been nothing short of inspiring.
For Ford, science has always been a passion, but it wasn’t until college that he discovered his calling in cosmetic chemistry. “I’ve always been passionate about science,” Ford shares. “But it wasn’t until college that I realized I could combine that passion with my love for creativity.”
Driven by a desire to bridge the gap in shade ranges for darker skin tones, Ford launched his own cosmetics company, Éclat Naturals. Inspired by his theatrical background, he formulated makeup specifically designed for Black and Brown skin. Despite the initial success, Ford eventually transitioned to contract manufacturing.
However, fate had other plans for Ford. A layoff during the COVID-19 lockdown propelled him into the world of content creation, where he quickly gained recognition for his expertise in cosmetic chemistry. Through viral TikTok videos, Ford became a beacon of knowledge in an industry plagued by exclusivity.
Recognizing the glaring disparities in beauty products catering to skin of color, Ford set out to challenge the status quo. Inspired by age-old color-changing technology, he developed the Sun-Kissed Cheek Stain, a universally flattering blush formula designed to complement all skin tones.
Unlike traditional formulas that often turn cool-toned pink on deeper skin tones, Ford’s blush boasts a warm peachy-orange hue that enhances natural beauty. Its oil-meets-gel consistency ensures seamless application on various skin textures, from mature to acne-scarred.
While Ford’s innovative product has garnered widespread acclaim and is currently sold out, he remains committed to driving systemic change within the cosmetics industry. Addressing the lack of inclusivity from raw material suppliers to consumer testing, Ford is paving the way for a more diverse and equitable beauty landscape.
As Ford continues his journey, he remains optimistic about the industry’s evolving attitude towards inclusivity. “People are becoming more aware of the issue,” Ford reflects. “And that gives me hope for a more inclusive future.”
