Recent cases of HIV transmission linked to “vampire facials” have raised concerns about the safety of this cosmetic procedure. Learn more about what vampire facials entail, the associated risks, and the implications of these cases.
Vampire facials, also known as platelet-rich plasma microneedling facials, aim to rejuvenate the skin, diminish acne scars, and reduce wrinkles. The procedure involves drawing blood from the client, separating platelets and cells, and injecting the plasma into the face using needles. Despite their popularity, recent incidents have highlighted potential risks associated with improper practices.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported cases of HIV transmission among clients of an unlicensed medical spa in New Mexico. Investigations revealed that the spa reused disposable equipment, leading to contaminated blood exposure during cosmetic services. While vampire facials are generally considered safe, these cases underscore the importance of proper infection control measures.
The New Mexico Department of Health conducted extensive testing on former spa clients and their partners, revealing no additional HIV infections beyond the initial cases. However, free testing remains available for individuals who may have been exposed to potential risks.
The legal consequences of these incidents have resulted in the conviction of the spa owner, Maria de Lourdes Ramos de Ruiz, on multiple felony counts related to practicing medicine without a license. Ramos de Ruiz pleaded guilty to conducting unauthorized procedures, including vampire facials, plasma treatments, and Botox injections. The spa faced closure following regulatory inspections, and Ramos de Ruiz received a sentence of 7 1/2 years, with a portion suspended on probation.
While vampire facials can offer cosmetic benefits, it’s crucial to ensure that procedures are performed by licensed professionals in compliant facilities. Patients should prioritize safety and verify the credentials of practitioners before undergoing any cosmetic treatment.
