The 2023 Miami Swim Week concluded on July 12 after nearly a week of runway shows and events. However, the annual swimwear event faced ongoing criticism regarding lack of diversity among models.
Online backlash heightened after racy shows like The Black Tape Project, where models wore duct tape bikinis. Some social media users argued the event promoted unrealistic body standards.
However, many brands did highlight diversity, including Lovechella Swimwear, Michael Costello, and Curve Collective. Their runways featured models across a wide range of ages, sizes, and ethnicities.
Beyond the controversy, Miami Swim Week highlighted key swimwear trends for 2023:
– Mermaidcore – Sparkling, jewel-toned bikinis and seashell accents reflected mermaid inspiration, likely tied to Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid.
– Western Wear – Fringed bikinis, cowprint, cowboy hats and boots drove a beach cowboy aesthetic.
– 80s Nostalgia – Neon colors, graphic prints, high-cut styles, and athletic influences harked back to power dressing and fitness crazes of the 1980s.
– Lingerie Looks – Brands blended lingerie and swimsuits as underwear remains a major women’s apparel category.
While diversity issues persist, Miami Swim Week aims to promote boundary-pushing swimwear styles to buyers and consumers. The event faces ongoing pressure to expand representation and move beyond criticism of past years.
