TerraCycle has introduced SalonCycle to the UK, offering a nationwide waste reduction solution for hairdressers, hair salons, and beauty salons. This initiative aims to divert salon waste from landfill or incineration, following a successful launch in the US.
The SalonCycle solution simplifies waste management by using just two categories: a box for human hair and another for metal and plastic items. With over 61,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK, the industry generates significant waste annually, with only a small percentage currently recycled.
SalonCycle provides hassle-free recycling with two dedicated boxes. The Human Hair – SalonCycle Composting Box collects hair clippings, while the Mixed Salon Waste – SalonCycle Recycling Box accepts items like used foils, metal colour tubes, and various plastics.
The process is straightforward: salons order SalonCycle boxes, place them strategically in high-traffic areas, and fill them with the designated waste. Once full, the boxes are shipped back to TerraCycle using provided UPS labels. TerraCycle then processes the waste into raw materials, composting hair and recycling plastics and metals into new products.
“We are excited to launch SalonCycle in the UK to tackle the substantial waste generated by the haircare and beauty industries. Our solution addresses the industry’s need for simplicity and effectiveness in waste management, offering a user-friendly approach that integrates seamlessly into salon operations,” says Julien Tremblin, General Manager of TerraCycle Europe.
