Proenza Schouler Designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez Assume Creative Direction at Loewe
In a pivotal moment for the luxury fashion world, LVMH has announced a transformative leadership change at Loewe, appointing Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez as the brand’s new creative directors. The American design duo, both 46 years old, are set to bring their unique creative vision to the Spanish leather-goods powerhouse, marking a significant transition in the fashion landscape.
The appointment comes as Jonathan Anderson, Loewe’s previous creative director, is expected to move to a top role at Dior, pending an official announcement from LVMH regarding the departure of current womenswear director Maria Grazia Chiuri. This strategic leadership shift signals a dynamic period of renewal for some of the most prestigious fashion houses under the LVMH umbrella.
McCollough and Hernandez, who originally launched Proenza Schouler in 2002 with critical support from Barneys New York and influential Vogue editor Anna Wintour, have a storied history in the fashion industry. After stepping down from their independent brand at the beginning of the year, the life and work partners are now pivoting their focus to this exciting new corporate opportunity in Paris.
The designers inherit a remarkable legacy at Loewe. Under Jonathan Anderson’s decade-long tenure, the brand underwent a remarkable transformation from a minor label to one of the most influential and frequently emulated fashion houses. Anderson’s creative direction elevated Loewe’s annual revenue to nearly €2 billion, characterized by playful, witty collections that emphasized artistic collaboration and exceptional craftsmanship.
Anderson’s recent collections, particularly since 2021, have been noted for their sexy, surrealist aesthetic, which dramatically enhanced Loewe’s fashion reputation. The brand became synonymous with bold, creative expression, especially through its expanded handbag line featuring iconic designs like the Puzzle and Flamenco bags.
Sidney Toledano, a top LVMH executive and adviser, expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating in WWD, “I have long admired Jack and Lazaro’s work at Proenza Schouler; their eclectic creativity and dedication to craft make them a natural choice to build the next chapter for Loewe.” While remaining on the board of Proenza Schouler, which is currently searching for a new head designer, McCollough and Hernandez are poised to write an exciting new chapter in the brand’s illustrious history.
